About

Hello! I’m Kirin. I’m a professional cellist/composer/improviser person and the Brooklyn Center for Performance is my teaching practice.

I have great respect for anyone who is committed to studying the cello, regardless of their skill level or age. In lessons and classes, my aim is to help you become more aware of your coordination, encourage you to discover your standards, and create a space where you feel safe to take creative risks.

Over the past 18 years, I’ve helped numerous amateur and pre-professional cellists as well as many professional musicians play with more accuracy, less tension, and greater enjoyment.

My teaching style combines traditional classical technique, mind-body awareness and a heavy emphasis on both the methodology of practice as well as nervous system regulation tools to help my students play more accurately and consistently with less anxiety and tension. I offer instruction in the western classical tradition as well as electroacoustic music, extended techniques, and free improvisation.

As a cellist, I’ve performed at Carnegie Hall, National Sawdust, le Poisson Rouge, the Apollo, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the MET, and NPR Tiny Desk Concerts, and have toured nationally and internationally as a collaborator and soloist. My career is equally split between performing/recording work and my teaching practice. You can learn more about my work as a performer here.

Credentials: Teaching certification (4 years) from the Philadelphia School for the Alexander Technique / M.M. in Cello Performance from Temple University / B.A. in Economics/French from Smith College / additional cello/Alexander Technique studies with Ann Rodiger and Evangeline Benedetti.

The Brooklyn Center for Performance

is a 540 square foot teaching studio and rehearsal space located in DUMBO Brooklyn.

We are obsessed with how our coordination impacts our musical and creative capacities, and all of our programming– regardless of whether we are working with a teen cellist, professional horn player in an Alexander Technique lesson or with a group of amateur cellists– reflects this.

Space rentals for artists are available on a monthly basis– if you are seeking comfortable, convenient, and affordable space for your teaching or personal practice on a regular basis, please contact us!
